It can be also named as Broadband Phone or Internet Telephony or Voice over Broadband or IP Telephony. Internet Telephony service providers make send voice signals over an IP network using different protocols. These protocols are named as Voice over IP.

The Network Voice Protocol was experimented with the earliest form of internet itself called ARPANET. These experiments show that since 1973 scientists are trying to route voice signals through the internet. However, this technology reached end users only from the 90s. During 90’s there were various technological developments in this field and VOIP facilities made available to common man.

IP Telephony is a technology which very popular these days because of its various advantages such as three-way-calling, automatic redial, call forwarding and caller ID facilities. VoIP Telephone providers give you these services for free. Also, VoIP calls and the broadband connection can be routed through the same line. Broadband service providers now also give a telephone line with the connection, as an add-on.
The main advantage of VoIP calls is that they are independent of the distance between the caller and callee and require only a broadband connection. Also other services like audio conferencing, video conferencing and data transfers can be provided with it.
